Performance Management at Southwest Airlines is evolving from a traditional end of year performance appraisal model to a continuous feedback model. We set out to solve the business problems of evolving Employee expectations for continuous feedback, and an annual performance appraisal process which did not support the rapid pace of business changes. Evolving to a continuous feedback model with the emphasis on coaching is less about reviewing past performance and more about future oriented development. The model, empowers the Employee through development, fosters a coaching culture, and enables collaboration on individual priorities to support business objectives. Our new Performance Management model incorporates quarterly Check-in conversations which provide a balanced look at recent performance with a view towards upcoming priorities. Employees can connect their talent and past success to future work and development while allowing opportunities to make proactive adjustments.

Presenters

Kerry Frost serves as a Sr. Business Consultant, Talent Development at Southwest Airlines in the People Department. Kerry’s focus is making sure that the more than 60,000 Employees in the Southwest family have the opportunity for growth and personal development through performance management.

Kerry has always been passionate about aviation and knew from a young age that she wanted to work in the airline industry. It was this passion that led her to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where she graduated with a degree in Aerospace Studies and earned her Private Pilot license. Kerry has worked for two airlines in her career, Southern Air Transport and Southwest Airlines. She has called Southwest Airlines home for 21 years. She joined in 1998 in the Network Planning Department, where she grew her career to Manager of Training. It was during that time when she discovered a passion for developing people and helping them be successful. After 11 years she made the leap to HR, as an HR Business Partner. While as an HR Business Partner she had the opportunity to learn many different areas of HR but always found her way back to talent development. She has spent the last six years researching, piloting and evolving Southwest performance management model to a continuous feedback model.

When not at Southwest, you can find Kerry at her second home—the ice rink – cheering, along with her husband, their six year old twins in their hockey and figure skating endeavors.

Bonnie has been in HR, Training and Talent Development for 20+ years, joining Southwest Airlines in 2008. During her journey to Southwest, she has led training and HR-initiatives at DA Consulting Group, IBM and Capital One.
